I have some photos that Ed sent to me regarding his check stay system if anyone is curious. Send me an email direct and I will forward them to you. I don't know how to do attachments in our web site.

Here in SF many of us use a system based on Ed Durbin's IXXIS. The vectran check is held above the boom not by the typical shock cord off the backstay but by fiberglass poles lashed to the pushpit--lifters I guess they would be called. They're 3/8 inch 8 foot fiberglass rods fabricated from easily available materials to which is lashed a stainless eye at the top end. When there's no load on the checkstay the poles are upright and the lazy check is away and above the boom. As the check gets tensioned to a centerline block at the stern the glass rod bends down so the check runs straight. My system ends in a 30:1 winch on the deck at about the traveler. Works great. We don't pay a penalty under PHRF.
