Steve:

A couple months ago the bearing liner of the strut bearing parted ways and slid up the shaft on Borderline. The prop shaft started clanking around and making a terrible noise. We made arangements with a local yard and had the boat hauled, hung in sling, bearing replaced and re-launched. This whole process took about two hours! The boat yard had special tool to press out the bearing and install the new one. All that had to be done is remove the prop. I was already to haul out and spend the time to pull the prop shaft and then hammer out the bearing and replace it. This was a lot simpler and the cost was very reasonable (about $400). Borderline is an Ericson built boat but the principle is the same. All you have to do is find a yard with the special tool and that is willing to work with you. One more thing. Keep an eye on them when they re-assemble your prop. We have a Martec folding prop and care must be taken when they are assembled. The cotter pins are monel not stainless steel and I believe the prop blades are match-marked for proper assembly. I'm glad I was there to make sure it was assembled correctly.

Good luck,
