You don't say if you have an Ericson hull or a Pacific hull. In the Ericson hull the Universal diesel has a glow plug heat sensor, and the engine manual said to press the glow plug button and hold it for about 45 seconds before cranking over the engine to start it. If you held it for too little time, or if the starting battery was getting long in tooth, or if the battery terminals were a but corroded and in need of cleaning to get bare metal on the post to a good bare metal battery connector, you would have to hold it longer.
