Mine are attached to dual Harken cars that run on tracks bolted to the coach
roof. As you pull aft on the car, the checkstay tightens. This works
pretty well, but the angle isn't ideal as much of the thrust is vertical
rather than horizontal.

So w/ the comments about checkstays from Rich, I had a more general question- and that is what are the advantages/disadvantages of checkstays and what are recommended positions for them??
2 of the other 911's here have them, we don't- what height on the mast do people recommend attaching them and how far back on the deck?? I have seen some that just go directly to the side of the mast, and some that are run much further aft..
