Yes, I had more play side to side that I wanted, but I essentially put up with it.

Late this year, though, I replaced my delaminating rudder. The new rudder stock is fractionally smaller in diameter than the old, so that made the play worse. My yard used some kind of bushing to control play at the lower end. They also discovered (to their surprise) that the upper bearing (Harken) had some set screws that allowed adjustment of the bearing races, so they were able to get rid of the upper play as well. It feels very solid now.

Thanks Klaus,

So do you have a play in your assembly? Ours probably has a 1/4" play side to side. It feels like much more than I've ever experienced on other boats?

I'm not sure whether the bearings are good or not. I know they look good but it seems unusual to have so much play.

I've copied Dave Morrow to get his feedback. It may well be the design.

One good side to the play is I get a nice shiver when the boat is in groove.
