Wow, what a great remembrance of the Olson 30 fleet in California. I also like Chuck got my first taste of sailing the olson 30 on Masquerade with John. I actually have a large photo of Masquerade and Jewel sailing side by side that hangs over my desk to remind me of the great times back then. John was actually friends with Bill Walters who was the owner of the Tartan 48 "Fleetwood" and eventually partners with my father John on the SC50 " Night Train". I can remember my first race on the boat was a trip from Ventura over to Santa Cruz and we spent the night then raced back. John was a blast to sail with and the boat was the most fun I'd ever had as a young kid coming up in sailing. I went on to sail sleds on the west coast and eventually down on the gulf coast and Florida but I will always remember my first ride on that awesome Olson 30.
