Aaron, this is exciting news! Remember for Turkey Day to have lots of sunblock, SPF 2000 is best! The Family Hour bunch came down last June from the Bay Area, and we had a hard time convincing them that they were sweating in all their foulies,,,,but they adapted! You folks up there sure do have some sophisicated foul weather gear, much better than our shorts and windbreakers! Remember, the invitation is out to everyone to attend this season wrap-up for the Olsons in SoCal. This is our crew's favorite event. We see scores of small boats that trailer down from the Bay Area for the event. Last summer, 30 Bay Area keel boats came for the June events. And remember the crews in Long Beach are very competitive! Look at the names of their boats...'Intense', 'Vendetta', 'Mad'

The drive from the Bay Area to Seattle (or vice versa) is beautiful. The only police action we saw was when we crossed into CA from OR at 70 mph, and a CHP immediately decided to tail us. Often times it is just because they are curious. We have never bothered with permits........juat make sure your registrations are up to date.

Remember that CA freeways have a lot of radar in use, so a detector may be useful. The signs are small. We typically stayed at 60 and had no problems. Can't tell you much about I-5 between Sacto and LA, as we always go 101. Of course we live two miles off of 101, so that has something to do with it. That section of I-5 or 99 is a major artery for truck traffic. 101, is more relaxed and scenic. There are several sections of ocean scenery. There are two major speed traps on it though, King City, and the area just south of Santa Maria, before you hit the ocean (Los Alamos). Both use airplanes, and prey on tourists (revenue enhancement). On the latter section, we are also typically seeing radar CHP behind oak trees.

Watch out for commuter traffic in any of the major areas, Santa Barbara included. Over 55 in traffic is not recommended, traffic will suck you up to 75 or 80 very quickly and you can round a curve and traffic is stopped. 405 just north of LAX is a classic location where this happens. You cannot stop with all the little cars. This will put your heart in your throat, and dimples in your steering wheel.

If you happen to go 101 from Sacto or Davis/Fairfield, be careful at the 680/24 interchange in Walnut Creek. This is fairly new and has some serious settling problems dropping off the bridges. You will see a lot of this in CA.

For air travelers, there are dirt cheap Seattle or Bay Area flights (San Jose esp) to LAX and maybe John Wayne (Orange County). JW is closer to Long Beach.

Will be looking forward immensely to seeing you down here with Stripe, er Scoundrel!
