It is my understanding that the current constitution allows asymmetrical
spinnakers. How does the fleet feel about this fact? While I am not
opposed to the idea of asymmetrical spinnakers, I am not sure the
constitution intended to allow this (although it does clearly state that
shape is not specified), nor do I want to spend the money to buy another
new sail - provided asymmetrical chutes show some benefit. It is my
understanding that there has been some interest in experimenting with
asymmetrical spinnakers. This is all well and good for the loft boats, but
it can be hard to keep up if you aren't getting sails for free.
I'd like to hear any thoughts on this issue. My first inclination is to propose we amend the constitution to specify symmetrical spinnakers. Maybe this is overkill. Before I make a proposal, what are the pros and cons? Are there any sailmakers out there who can comment on whether it really matters? Is anyone building (or requesting) asymmetrical chutes? Is this a real issue, or is it simply speculation?
