1999 Olson 30 National Meeting
July 20, 1999
Oak Harbor Yacht Club
Whidbey Island Race Week 99
125+ Olson 30 skippers, crew, family and friends took part in this years Annual Olson 30 National Dinner, held Tuesday evening of Olson 30 Nationals. The Oak Harbor Yacht Club graciously agreed to put on the well-attended dinner in conjunction with Whidbey Island Race Week '99. 38 members stayed for the Olson 30 Annual National Meeting, which followed:
John Hoag/Roadrunner opened the meeting at 9:20pm. 1. Minutes from last year's annual O30 Meeting, held at Seattle Yacht Club over Memorial Day weekend were accepted. 2. Dave Lampert/Norma Jean, was voted in as the next Olson 30 National Class President. Paul Carter/Roadrunner, current PNW class treasurer, agreed to continue as the O30 National class treasurer into 2000. 3. Dave Lampert began his presentation by encouraging participation by the Olson 30 fleet at the Turkey Day Regatta this fall in Long Beach. Long Beach was voted in at last years National meeting to be the site of next years Olson 30 Nationals.
Nationals 2000 - The current proposal is to hold next years Olson 30
Nationals in Long Beach, California. Dave explained that there are two
very well organized regattas held back to back, the third and fourth
weekends in June, making up a race week of sorts, with a few days in
between for Disney Land etc. The first weekend, tentatively June 16-18,
is put on by the Long Beach Yacht Club and would make an excellent
tuning opportunity. The following weekend's regatta is hosted by the
Gollison family, out of Alamedas Bay Yacht Club but held on the same
waters, both inside and outside the Long Beach breakwater. This format
would be very similar to the successful Seattle format of '95 and '98 in
which the Seattle Yacht Club SOCKS regatta was held the weekend before
the O30 Nationals, giving out of town boats an opportunity to get used
to the local conditions.
Dave suggested that the Olsons would all be kept together at Alamedas
Bay YC. Also, being only 485 miles south of San Francisco, and with easy
access form I-5, should encourage participation from both the Bay fleet
and those from the Northwest that are already used to the trip down the
I-5 corridor.
A discussion followed of event details. Mark Hulbert/Airtime asked about
parking. Trevor Hayward/M.O.F. asked about accommodations. Detailed
information will follow, as it becomes available.
Nationals 2001 and beyond - Dean Danials/Neuromancer made a proposal for hosting the next available Nationals out of the San Francisco Bay area, perhaps Richmond Yacht Club or overlapped with the St. Francis hosted annual NOOD Regatta held every Labor Day Weekend. * John Hoag pointed out that Salt Lake City had previously made a proposal for 2001 but, as no one from that fleet was in attendance, it was unclear if there was still an interest from that fleet in hosting a National event. It was agreed to hold off on a final decision for 2001 but to use San Francisco for the next available venue, whether that be 2001 or 2002.
KEELS -- Skip Jones/Louie Louie led a discussion on work done as to keel
measurement over the past year and gave recognition to all the work that
had been done thus far. Skip also expressed concern that there is still
potential for someone to moving their keel pointing out there "there are
two was to get a boat to go upwind - move the keel forward or the
forestay back."
Eric Kristen/Lunch Box did a lot of work on towards the Keel measurement
issue but made it clear he hoped to leave open the ability to make
future adjustments and refinements.
John Hoag suggested a class measurer.
Mark Hulbert thought that that should be someone from outside the fleet.
Stacey Wilson/Splash Tango felt that would be too difficult, it should
be Corinthian, ie: trust.
Mike Goldfarb/War Canoe pointed out that the idea was to come up with an
envelope. That these measurements were to be able to provide actual
numbers to work with if someone were to need to take their boat to a
yard for work.
John Hoag asked that a vote be taken, as an amendment to the
constitution was already on the table, following the guidelines set by
the Olson 30 Constitution.
Chris Johnson/Wyewacket questioned the min/max.
Mike Goldfarb again pointed out the goal of an 'envelope'.
Dean Daniels, speaking for himself and the three proxy's he had brought
with him from the San Francisco fleet, said that "down there we sail by
crew and sails," and that they were happy and supportive of the work
done thus far by members of the PNW fleet.
John Rahn question why spinnaker girths had not been addressed.
Chris Johnson claimed to have made a proposal over email.
Stacy Wilson again pointed out that any and all proposals must be made
in writing, by postal mail thirty days prior to a National Meeting as
set down by the Olson 30 Constitution.
John Hoag called for a vote. The amendment was accepted with one nay.
New Business:
Trevor Hayward/M.O.F. questioned whether this was a National regatta or
should now be considered, with his Canadian boat participating, as an
International Regatta. Trevor then proposed Cowichan Bay, on Vancouver
Island, as the site of a future International Regatta. Skip Jones
agreed, as did others in the room that had sailed that venue. Stacey
Wilson pointed out that if Salt Lake backs out then "Cow Bay", as it is
affectionately known, could be a reality as early as 2002, after San
Francisco. Both Trevor & Skip thought that the Royal Victoria Yacht Club
would/should probably want to be involved.
Dean Daniels proposed that next year the wording in the constitution should be changed to International Regatta vs. National Regatta.
Stacey Wilson moved to adjourn at 10:05 pm.
