We should give them a shot. I doubt they will use downwind starts for all the races.

We're all more our less equally ignorant about downwind starts (whos got my tactics books?), but I suspect the winner of the downwind will be the one with the guts to pop the chute early enough (or the one with the rubber bands). But the downwind starts eliminate parades because the loosers are giving bad air to those who win the starts, then they get to split with the winners at the leeward gates. The boats will then be close when they cross at the midcourse gate.
Can you say great photo op? We don't see the big shifts or variations of wind across the circle in the Summer, so taking flyers out isn't such a big deal. I don't think the course will be two miles anyway.

Midcourse gates also give the committee the option of halting a parade early by shortening course at the gate. Is that part of the standing rules or does it have to be written into the sailing instructions?

The downwind finishes could get interesting. I hope everybody remembers that the ends of the finish line are marks of the course and that boats on different gybes are usually overalapped. Right?

Dale et al,

The course graphic is back up. Also, it should be noted that the potential for downwind starts and the leeward gates etc are ideas that came from two of the more talented members of the fleet, who have a good understanding of parades (since they both used to lead them). It may backfire, but I think it has more potential for being a kick-ass good time.

And having personally raced with leeward gates (j-24 nationals) I can vouch for it being a nice equalizer as you can make a strategic decision/choice as to which to round, what side to douse, etc.
