Thanks for all your fast responses on where to get and how to replace my = pipe berth track. I'd especially like to thank Willi Zarth of "Think = Fast" for offering to give me the track from his boat. (Gestures like = that make our fleet great!)
Several people wanted to know how I solved this problem. So here = goes...
As luck would have it, Svendsen's in Alameda had it after all. Over the = phone, they told me they definitely didn't have it. But it turns out = they have enough of the tracks in stock to refit our entire fleet. The = problem was that only one guy knew what I was talking about. Everybody = else kept shaking their head at me with a funny look on their face. I = kept trying, and finally got a look of recognition...It took twenty = minutes to find them in the attic of their warehouse. =20
Simple Fix: First I cut the track in half to 8 feet. (It's sold in 16 = foot lengths). I then drilled 1/8th inch holes in the fastening flange = and affixed the track with half-inch sheet metal "truss" screws spaced =3-inches apart. DO NOT USE LONGER SCREWS! The whole procedure took = about 15 minutes. (The key is to AVOID using the same holes the rivets = were in: MAKE NEW HOLES.) I then tied the "hammock" to the pipe berth = and tightened the whole thing like a drum. The true test came when I = bounced around on the bunk...it held like a dream! Man, are we going to = be a happy and well-slept crew on this Coastal Cup.
Thanks again,
Dale
