Here in San Francisco the boats rate 96 and race successfully against a
variety of mostly heavier, bigger boats.
It can be great to go out and beat big boats that are spending many times
more
for less fun.
Its important to get plenty of meat on the rail for PHRF racing when its
windy. San Francsisco has no crew number or
weight limits for PHRF racing, and if your local PHRF limits you to less
than
about 1200lbs (some would say 1400) you might have a hard time sailing to
your
rating in all wind conditions.
In the SF Ocean races we compete mostly against Express 27s and Moore 24s
and
can usually do ok, but there are times when we struggle to finish boat for
boat with the slower rating boats. The ocean races can be more of a
crapshoot.
There are certainly a lot worse choices than an Olson 30 for PHRF. The problem is that PHRF racing just isn't as much fun as one design. I assume you've ruled out all the one-design options in your area and price range.
