I'm measuring my own sails. Mostly done. I "borrowed" the floor in a
sail loft for a few minutes for the main without causing much
disruption. It takes two people, a steel measuring tape, and a couple
straight edges, like a paint stick, to do extensions at the corners.

A base set of measurements is required and for oddly shaped sails you
take some intermediate measurements. Since I don't know what would
count as oddly shaped I just did all the measurements, which is no
harder, just to be sure. On principle I'm in favor of more
measurements. What gets done with those measurements is a different
matter since it's kind of weird to use precise measurements to make
adjustments to a base rating that isn't based on measurements, but it's
a simple way to go. I'm no expert but if you want any help measuring
let me know.

I am aware of the PHRF new sail measuring program. I am resisting it! The Sail lofts are resisting it, almost , in that they intend to charge $30 for each sail measured: 3 sails =$180. This triples the cost of using PHRF as a handicaping system . Also, the measuring system is an individual Pacific NW system which is not recognized by anyone else in the world, PHRF Fleets or Sail Lofts. Our sails (J-35 one design sails), are built and measured to a published specification which has been in exsistence for about 20+ years and will still be required by our National Fleets regardless of what the Pacific NW PHRF new measurement requires(Are we going to have to buy 2 sets of sails to race Fleet or PHRF?). Furthermore, no one has published or publically debated the expected improvements of the "New" PHRF measurement requirements, to my knowledge. I truely believe that this is another PHRF un-democratic, costly, unproven, improvision on North West boat owners.
I think the PHRF system would be greatly improved if they developed a system to track each major boat race in the North West area. When there is an indication that something has become imbalanced, then take action to investigate and correct the out of balance Handicap. Sail measurement is not nearly as unbalancing as say modifying boats by removal of specified parts, (Back stays, for example). Tracking is not beyond the capabilities of our system in the computer age!
I call on the Officers and Handicappers of PHRF to publish the reasons and expected improved handicaping results for the Sport's PHRF Boating members. I also request that PHRF leaders open a one year Public debate of the advantages and disadvantages of the new proposed system. After one year let the registered Members od PHRF VOTE on the proposed change.

And all the info I've heard says that even if you have a valid One-Design or a current PHRF certificate, you still need to take your individual sails in to be measured and get a new certificate. Otherwise, you won't be scored!
CYC and some of the local sail lofts are going to make this easier by holding a sail measurement day at CYC Shilshole. The date is presently scheduled to be January 20 and the hours are being finalized depending on the level of participation. Currently it is scheduled to start at 10 am and run into the afternoon. (Presently this is for CYC members only.)
