Niels,

I have been sailing a J-35 for 6 years now. I find that the PHRF rating is right. We also try to be well prepared and usually sail very well also, the result is in 6 years we have been PHRF boat of the year several times. I find the only time we have a problem with the rating is in reachathons against boats with similar LWL..

Here's what I like about the J:
Its easy to make this boat go fast.
It responds well to trim and changing gears. The boat is fairly durable.
I can perform most repairs myself.
It's a pleasure to drive.
Heavy air is a blast.
Active One design racing fleet
Does well in PHRF
Can be used for cruising

Those are the things that come to mind.

Good Luck with your decision

Bill

Subject: Question?

I like a lot of things about the J35, having never sailed one. But what does it do to justify a 72 rating? To the boat that is the one to beat, I am giving 36 seconds in a J-35. That is a lot. It is a Santana 30/30 GP and very consistent winner, well prepared, and very well sailed. Just wondering if I might be better off with a more favorably rated boat? Do they sail to there rating?
