Scott,
Does your crack start at a fitting or mounting hole? I am aware of other masts getting spider cracks out from fittings that were put (even original equipment) to near the partners.
I have a J35 mast spreaders shrouds and backstay for sale that has a 1" crack at a fitting bolt hole near the partners. The mast was replaced in spring 98 and has been hanging out in the yard since then. Sounds like a similar easy repair would take care of it.
