I just had a mast failure on my 1988 J-35, Miss Bubba. The mast cracked
horizontally 90% of the way around just after it exited the cabin top. I
noticed that it appeared to start at the exit point for one of the halyards,
and also that the thickness of the extrusion appeared to be the same around
the entire circumference. I always thought the mast was supposed to be
thicker at the leading edge. Just wondered if this is a common problem, and
is Hall Spars still building the J35 mast this way. Are we allowed any
leeway in ordering spars as to where they put the halyard exits? Comments
would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Roger Wendell
