I have spent the last week contemplating the merits of the proposed changes. I appreciate all the points of view expressed in this forum. All the views expressed have merit. I believe these Proposals were put forth with only good intentions I just think they will not benefit the class in any way. I will be voting based on the following beliefs.
Those that sail with 2 pros in all likelihood will benefit more than those that don't. Adding more pros with the implied restrictions only opens another set of loopholes that lead to gray areas and possibly outright abuse. The pro rule is hard enough to enforce/police in its present form. Not to mention that it puts anyone that questions a competitor in an awkward position. Ask yourself how many times have you not questioned or protested a competitor because you didn't know all the details or didn't want the grief? Remember we are self policed, if you don't question or protest a competitor if need be than the rules will be broken knowingly, by ignorance, or because others are also breaking the rules.
As for carbon fiber poles for the J-35. This seems to go against all one design principals. We currently have a large group of boats that all have aluminum poles. This follows the one design principal, all boats should be as similar as possible. Their is already a difference in boats due to production variance. Lets not widen the gap any little bit if we can help it. Remember the fastest boat will be the one that best capitalizes on the sum total of many subtle improvements. Ask yourself if you had 12lbs sitting in your V-berth that you could pickup and move to the bilge, or even off the boat, would you? Also when carbon fiber breaks I believe you have a higher risk of human injury as opposed to if an aluminum pole fails. Their is a definite advantage to having a carbon fiber pole.
Yes I've decided to voting NO on both, Proposed Modification 1: Permitting the use of Carbon Fiber Spinnaker Poles, and Proposed Modification 2: increasing the number of "professional" sailors.
If these rules pass I can have both if I so desire I just don't think
its good for the class and doesn't adhere with the following class
rules:
2.4 The JCA shall maintain the one design characteristics of the J/35.
2.5 The JCA shall promote one-design corinthian yacht racing.
Thanks to the class officers for their work. It is nice to see real progress and substance to the class web site. I hope the local fleets contribute so we may all see what works for them and hopefully benefit from their experiences.
Remember to vote.
Note that the ballot and your dues go to totally different addresses.
