A1: KVH makes what they call a "Puck Transducer" that does not require a
hole. The benefits are three fold: a) its compatible with the KVH
system. b) it allows you to move it closer to the cnterline (in my case
we nestled it in the corner of the bulkheads under the floor boards of
the head) and c) this allows you to glass over your previous hole and
make your bottom more fair ( in addition it is a lot easier to fill in
the hole than it is to get enlarge the hole to fit KVH's measurements).
A:2 I think this is a preference thing. They're expensive and probably only useful on your halyard winches.
